Acclaim

95 Points - "There are nearly 300 caes of the 2009 Zinfandel Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard, another century old vine Zinfandel. The most concentrated, lavishly rich, exuberant offering in this portfolio, it boasts a dens ruby/purple color in addition to an extra gear or two as well as abundant amounts of boysenberry, blueberry and black raspberry fruit intermixed with spice, pepper and hints of wood. With beautiful purity and vivaciousness, this prodigious Zinfandel is about as good as it gets for this varietal. Drink this opulent, flamboyant Zin over the next 5-7 years." - Robert Parker, Jr., Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2011

93 Points - "Inky ruby. Expansive, flamboyant bouquet evokes dark berry preserves, cola, incense and violet, with hints o smoke and fruitcake building with aeration. Lush, creamy and broad, with dense dark fruit and floral flavors enlivened by zesty spices. Very rich but almost shockingly lithe, with intense finishing spiciness and repeating florality." - Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, June 2011

Vineyard Character

The 101-year old Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard is located on seven acres off Wood Road in the Russian River Valley AVA of Sonoma County. It is dry-farmed and has been hand-tended by the Fanucchi family for the last 35 years. The vineyard is head trained, but Peter Fanucchi raised the gnarled old vines from just above ground level to chest height. This modification appears to provide greater sun exposure, air circulation, and has reinvigorated the old vines, enhancing the production of the high-quality, old vine fruit.

The soils on Wood Road are sandy loam of relatively low pH and fertility. The old vines on these soils produce small Zinfandel berries with bright, concentrated cherry and blackberry fruit flavors. At optimum ripeness, the fruit makes a big, intense, long-lived Zinfandel of unique personality.
